In deep night, I sat in silence among the lifeboats on the leeward deck, basking in the quiet. After days of the hubbub of cruise life, stillness was what I craved. I looked out on calm waters, across unknown distance to the lights of another ship on the horizon. I wondered that even this far out at sea, there were signs of other life. I wished in a way that it wasn’t so. I imagined an emptier ocean, where I might have the moon to myself. Basking in that glow, I might commune with night itself. Such are the thoughts of an idyll mind.
