Our Lady of the Park.
Margarito Mondragón was hauling firewood to his home one wintry evening near Las Vegas, NM when he saw in a piece of wood the image of Christ, so he set about, with knife and screwdriver, to set free the figure that he’d seen. Since that day, the wood has continued to inspire him to create many bultos, retablos, and other imaginative works, which have made their way into collections far and wide. In the Plaza Park of Las Vegas, New Mexico, stands Our Lady of the Park, who holds her hands in forlorn prayer, a simulacrum perhaps of the nearby Our Lady of Sorrows church. Gazing upon her, I felt blessed, to be here, now, in this time and place.
