The Big Texan
If you’ve ever watched Man vs. Food, you probably know something about The Big Texan Steak Ranch, famous for it’s 72oz steak challenge, wherein challengers have to conquer a huge steak as well as all the accouterments- Shrimp Cocktail, Baked Potato, Salad, with Roll and Butter. I’m afraid that I’m not the man to try to tackle that since I do well to eat an 8oz steak, but apparently the woman for the job is Molly Schuyler, who shattered all records by eating 3 of them in one sitting. That’s over 13 and a half pounds of meat!
But even for those of us who don’t have the guts (literally) to devour a huge hunk of protein like that, The Big Texan is well worth a stop just for its history and atmosphere. Back in 1960, when it first opened, it was one of the many roadside attractions along Route 66, promising not only giant steaks but also an ambiance reminiscent of the western movies and tv shows that were still popular back in those days. Today, after moving in 1969 and rebuilding after a fire in 1976, The Big Texan sits alongside interstate 40, a tribute to steak, Texas, and great appetites.
